Job Summary

Performs non-professional nursing duties in the care of a wide range of patients, including ages from pediatric to adult, medical, surgical, critically ill, and obstetrical patients.

Job Duties

Routine duties shall include providing health care services to individuals eligible for services in accordance with the self-governance compact and funding agreement between the Cherokee Nation and the United States executed under the authority of the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act.  Assumes assigned patient load of selected patients, and is responsible for patients from admission to discharge. Recognizes patients' conditions for changes and documents this information. Collaborates with the Registered Nurse to carry out nursing care. Participates in updating patients' care plans.  Participates in planning patient care that is consistent with accepted nursing standards and in compliance with the prescribed medical treatment plan.  Works toward discharge objectives by supporting the patient/family in participating and implementing the patient's plan of care. Provides instructions and information to patients/families regarding procedures and treatments, medications, follow-up care, and illnesses, and diseases.  Performs a wide range of treatment procedures, including heat and cold therapy; extensive sterile dressing changes; starting, maintaining, and monitoring IV's; inserting catheters and NG tubes; administering enemas; caring for isolation patients; preparing and administering medications, including IV medications; and setting up for and giving treatments such as oxygen, suction, and respiratory therapy.  Performs a wide range of diagnostic support duties, including taking vital signs, documenting patient's pain perception, obtaining specimens, receiving and recording lab reports, assisting physicians with procedures such as bone marrow biopsies, lumbar punctures, pelvic examinations, and endoscopies by positioning patients, setting up for the procedure and passing instruments.  Observes and documents pertinent information regarding patient status. Takes appropriate actions to alleviate problems based on findings, including notifying physician and/or registered nurse of significant changes in patients' status. Carefully observes patients for response to nursing treatments and procedures.  Operates and monitors nursing equipment, general and specialized, such as blood pressure monitors, pulse oximeters, electronic thermometers, cardiac monitors, telemetry, aerosol tents, patient-controlled anesthesia pumps, and IV infusion pumps.  Performs clerical duties as assigned. Operate and monitor general and some specialized care equipment.  Provides Human Resources with a copy of all licensures, certifications, renewal of licensures and certifications upon receipt thereof.  Other duties may be assigned.

 

Surgical Services:  Required to be on-call on a rotating basis including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

No supervisory responsibilities are required.

Qualifications

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT

Graduate of an accredited practical nurse or vocational nursing program.

 

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

No additional experience.

 

COMPUTER SKILLS REQUIRED

To perform this job successfully, an individual should know Database software; Human Resource systems; Internet software; Order processing systems, and Payroll systems.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Must possess a license as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) from the Oklahoma Board of Nursing (OBN) or possess a multistate LPN license accepted by the OBN; no substitutions.  Must maintain throughout employment. 

Must be certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) and maintain throughout employment.  Can be obtained during orientation. 

Must be certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and maintain throughout employment.  If not certified, ACLS certification must be obtained within six (6) months of hire. 

All Departments, except the Obstetrical Department, must be certified in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and maintain throughout employment.  If not certified, PALS certification must be obtained within six (6) months of hire. 

Must be certified in National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) and maintain throughout employment.  If not certified, NIHSS must be obtained within six (6) months of hire. 

A driver’s license may be required to work in some departments.  If so, the applicant/employee must possess a valid driver’s license with a driving history verified through a motor vehicle report that meets the requirements for Cherokee Nation underwriting rating.

 

REQUIREMENTS FOR DEPARTMENTS:  If not certified at date of hire, must be obtained within six (6) months of hire and maintained throughout employment unless otherwise specified.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

The employee must not be and will not be under sanction by the United States Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General (OIG) or by the General Services Administration (GSA) or listed on the OIG’s Cumulative Sanction Report, or the GSA’s List of Excluded Providers, or listed on the OIG’s List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE).  Must meet and maintain pre-employment and periodic background investigation and adjudication for child care.  Educated on and compliant with HIPAA regulations and maintains strict confidentiality of patient information.
